Caddy

A vegetable basket inspired by the tool caddy - a project into crate like structural principles.

This piece is made of cherry wood which gives it a rosy glow and a rustic homely feel to a more practical form that is inspired from.

The open sides allow for dirt to seep out and the slanted bottom means vegetables won't pile and bruise each other.

In the Making

I started this piece by deconstructing crates and looking at the core values of structural principles - learning about where wood should be fixed for the strongest hold.

Joined from standard sized planks and sections and overall being intrigued by the tool caddy's structure I worked to create a vegetable and fruit basket for harvesting or market stools.

The process

Through model making on a 1:5 scale and prototyping on rhino and with plywood I created the shape to bring to cherry wood.

Made for manufacture with standised parts and glue, nail and staple fixings.

Details and Joinery

The basket has 2 sloped sides to it - on is flatter and long and one is steeper and shorter - the shorter area is better for longer vegetables like carrots to be stacked and the longer means that rounder produce can be placed next to eachother and packed in.

A corner view of diagonal staples meeting both the walls and outside beam.
An overview of the baskets average produce capacity.
The handle meets flush with each wall and is nailed in to compress the handle in with tension.

Showcasing my design work and creative journey.
